Using Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) to Progress Monitor IEP Goals: A Proposed Framework

Author

Abstract

Special education teachers are responsible for developing and monitoring the progress of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). This has contributed to high levels of stress and unmanageable workloads. With access to Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) tools, such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Claude, special education teachers may benefit from using these tools to support ongoing documentation. While current research has demonstrated that GenAI can be used to write high-quality IEP goals in less time than traditional methods (Rakap, 2024), limited attention has been given to its application in progress monitoring. This article offers a practice-oriented framework for using GenAI to support this process. While this framework has not been researched, it offers a practical model for integrating GenAI into required administrative practices. This article reinforces the need for continued professional learning of GenAI tools.
